What months of the year is SMRR open?

We are open year round for pork sales, breeding stock sales, filming, events and cabin stays (17*N cabin). Site 2 Knoll is open year round for camping and RV’s while the remaining campsites are closed December 15th until March 15th. We occasionally close for vacation.

Can I visit the ranch just for the day?

Visiting the ranch requires making an appointment with Catherine. Please call 828.246.7372 or email us through the contact page. Private tours may be arranged for a fee.

What do your raise at the ranch?

We raise the unique heritage Mangalitsa pig from Hungary. We sell whole hogs to private customers and high-end restaurants and retail cuts and sausage at the ranch. Please visit www.smokymangpig.com for more information.

How do I make a reservation?

Camping and RV boondocking reservations can be made through Hipcamp. Reservations for 17*N Cabin can be made through Airbnb and Hipcamp.

Where is SMRR located?

We are located in western NC, 20 miles west of Asheville and one mile off of Interstate 40 (though you cannot hear it). We are 10 minutes to downtown Waynesville and 15 minutes to Maggie Valley. Gatlinburg is 50 minutes away and the Asheville airport is 40 minutes south. Our address is

Is SMRR safe for solo travelers?

We are completely perimeter fenced in a very nice area named Ironduff and Crabtree. There is only one access drive into the ranch and we have not had any incidence or trespassing or foul play. Our campsites are well spaced and private without being isolated. We believe you are safe here.

What type of RV’s and campers are allowed?

There are seven campsites situated next to either a creek or river while two sites are at higher elevation. We can accomodate any size vehicle or RV but not at every site. Are pets allowed?

Yes, camping pets are allowed for a one time fee of $12 each. Pets accompanying 17*N Cabin guests incur a one time fee of $40 each. We request your pet be leashed but allow owners to decide when and if their pet can run free. We expect that pets will not interfere with other visitors, visitors’ pets or ranch animals.

What are the check-in and out times for camping?

Check-in is 12 noon or later and check-out is 11am. We request that you share an ETA so that we can meet and greet you and escort you to your site. Check in after sundown is difficult and the ranch is dark and difficult to navigate. You may come and go as you like anytime after checking in. What is the cancellation policy?

Refunds are issued through the booking platforms Hipcamp and Airbnb. Please read your reservation carefully. We do not refund for inclement weather, illness or change of mind. Acts of God and natural disasters may warrant refunds and we consider these on an individual basis.

Can I call you to book a site or do I have to go through Hipcamp or Airbnb?

Please use the platform of your choice to make a reservation. They are free to use and can be accessed via their app or desktop version. Please refresh your browser to be sure to get updated information prior to booking.

What do I do with my garbage?

Our camping visitors must take thier garbage home with them or dispose of it at the nearby Crabtree Convenience Center less than 2 miles away. It is closed on Sunday and Tuesday. The address is 5859 Crabtree Road.

What is there to do at SMRR?

The 95 acre ranch offers opportunities to camp, fish, swim, tube, kayak, stroll, sit and play! If camping isn’t your thing, you may stay in our new mountain cabin, 17*N which offers a king sized bed with luxury linenes and a fully kitted bathroom amongst other amenities. The unique mangalitsa wooly pigs are fascinating and the horses, goats and donkeys are a delight to watch. Private farm tours are available ($15/person) and include the history of the Mangalitsa and interacting with the miniature donkeys. Come camp with us and experience farm life!

Can I get married at the ranch?

We have been honored to be part of several elopements and intimate wedding ceremonies for no additional charge. Keep in mind that we have no facilities or shelters at this time. If you expect to have a large group lease contact Catherine for customized pricing.

What facilities are available at the ranch?

We provide two porta potties March 15th to December 15th. All campsites have fire pits and most have picnic tables. We do not provide any covered shelters (other than site 4 Shooting Shed campsite), cooking equipment, dump stations, electricity or garbage disposal.

Are there any dangerous animals at the ranch?

We have seenn one Black Bear in five years and hear coyotes often. Stetson is our free-roaming large Anatolian livestock guardian dog. He is very good at his job but comes with challenges. He will happily redecorate your campsite, eat off your bbq and tear into your garbage. He does not like when young children grab him, reach for him or wave their hands at him. He has never hurt a child or dog and has met hundreds of both. Keep in mind he is not a domestic pet please.

Are campfires allowed?

Campfires are allowed at all campsites in designated fire pits. Firewood is available for purchase by the bundle. A propane fire pit is available at 17*N Cabin.

Can I fly my drone or take pictures?

Yes you may! We expect however that you will respect other visitors, livestock and follow any restrictions and laws that may be outlined for Haywood County.

Are there any unique booking policies to stay at SMRR?

  • We charge per vehicle and each vehicle admits four campers. Additonal campers incu a small nightly fee.

  • We reserve the right to relocate you to another campsite due to damage, unsafe conditions or late arrival.

  • It is your responsibility to maintain situational awareness and take precautions while camping, touring or staying at the ranch.

Where can I eat, buy fuel or purchase groceries?

Waynesville is 10 minutes away with wonderful shops, restaurants and breweries along Main Street. Presnell’s Farm Market is just over 2 miles away and offers an incredible selection of vegtables, dairy, eggs, meats, jams, spices and baked goods. They have a food truck too! They are open M-SA 10-6pm. Less than 1 mile away are a Pilot and Shell station.

Where can I charge my EV?

This is a challenge to answer as not all EV’s share the same charging plug thus are not suited to every charging station. We know of only one EV charging bay on nearby Jonathon Creek road. Ingles grocery store offers charging also.

Can we come camp as a large group?
